At the end of each year, we anticipate a new start, a new year. Goals are set. A family plan is made. Anticipation builds. Goals keep us moving forward. They are our plan, but it takes work to make them reality.

Goals Keep Us Keep Moving Forward
Goals keep us moving forward.

A Family Plan

For the last decade our family has created an annual family plan that details personal goals for each family member for the upcoming year. Each family member sets goals for different areas of life: spiritual, personal wellness, financial, and home improvement projects. Our family plan keeps us focused and helps us to reach our goals. Here was our first family plan we created in 2010. Each year the goals became more specific as we learned through the process.

Goal for October 2020

This month I have decided to share with you a personal goal of my own. During the month of October, I am going to walk a mile a day. It may seem trivial to some but for me this is a big step. I have always struggled with self care as a mom of three. Doctors and specialists have encouraged me for years to develop the habit of walking daily. Yet their encouragement fell on deaf ears. I would make excuses, “I can’t because…”

During this pandemic, we have had limitations placed upon us for the greater good of humankind. It has given each of us the opportunity to think about how our actions affect others. The opportunity to reflect on what’s really important and unimportant. These limitations can actually help us to eliminate the non-essential elements in our lives that we’ve allowed to take center stage and distract us from what’s most important. Why not experiment with setting your own limits? I have made a personal examination and found that by focusing on what’s really important and setting limits, I can make room for self care. To be a good mother, wife, and friend I need to work toward being a healthier me. That is my motive for being a healthier person.

To keep myself accountable, I am going to publish an update of my walking log regularly during the month. What goal can you set to reach during the month of October? Enlist a friend to partner with and keep yourself motivated. Let’s work together to reach a goal!
