The Minimalist Game – Days 23, 24, 25
Despite our desire to rid our home of unused, needless clutter some items that we decided to part ways with this week have tugged at our heart strings. Why do we catalog our memories with possessions? It’s going to take more than 30 days to change the way our minds and hearts interpret our possessions.

My husband turned 40 at the beginning of this week. The decision to part with our CD music collection feels like giving away precious memories, why? A song may bring to mind a specific moment that we cherish in our lives. Music certainly does stir the soul and our emotions. It isn’t the actual disc though, that awakens the exact moment in our minds eye. The memory is burned in our minds and hearts and will live on despite the 20 year old disc being donated tomorrow.

When you stop and reflect on any separation anxiety that is thwarted by the act of disposing of the material goods, it’s exciting to think that we are actually making room for new memories. Memories that we wouldn’t have time to make if we were left moving our old junk around that we confuse for feelings of nostalgia.
The more you know the less you need. Beautiful, simple words of wisdom.
