“Fear less, hope more; eat less, chew more; whine less, breathe more; talk less, say more; love more, and all good things will be yours.” – Swedish proverb.
Two years ago my husband made the decision to sell two very precious items that he enjoyed: a 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 and a 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. He loved to rebuild and tinker with each of the vehicles. In fact, in the late 90s he had rebuilt his first FJ40 prior to our marriage. This finished project was his pride and joy. He sold it to put a down payment on our first house and to purchase my wedding ring. For our 10th anniversary I was able to find the exact year, make and model to gift him with the idea that it would rekindle his love of rebuilding Land Cruisers.
While he enjoyed the project, much had changed since his days as a bachelor. It seemed after owning the second FJ40 for several years that it was a project that would just be a continued source of frustration. His priorities were some place else. The projects were just too daunting with the amount of time available to enjoy them. The items that he is parting with this week are pieces of the FJ60 that he found deep in storage. It is a reminder that as our lives change so should our priorities. I know that it was hard for him to sell the two vehicles that reminded him of good times but it was a good decision that he is at peace with.
We can’t live in the past. We can learn from the past; we must be in the present. You can’t reach for anything new if your hands are full of yesterday’s junk.
