Little House On A Plastic Planet

Hawaii Winter: A Time to Reflect

December 31, 2020 by Jenny Erickson

It’s winter in Hawaii. Cooler weather is here. The large waves have arrived. The mornings have been delightfully crisp. Our move to the Hawaii homestead is complete! One mango tree is fruiting out of season and today we tasted our first fruit. Butterflies are fluttering about in the sunlight as it peaks through the mango tree canopy. Tis the season to see all edible greens munched to the stems as the caterpillars grow to make this beautiful transition. The recently planted kale and bok choy reveal that they have been a delicious meal for these delicate beauties. The butterflies know nothing of the coronavirus. They are in the moment of winter in Hawaii enjoying the morning sun, exercising their wings.

This has been one crazy year of ups and downs. Reality is that many of us are fighting unhealthy behaviors this year more than ever. For some of us the consequences to our bodies show up quicker than others. On the positive side, this allows for realization, reflection and motivation for change.

As I reflect, some of our family goals for 2020 have been met others have been defeated. Perhaps not defeated but delayed. Delayed until tomorrow. It is up to us to decide if tomorrow ever comes.

During December, the discussion of our 2021 family plan has begun. As a family, we talk about our hopes and dreams for the next year. All five of us will set physical and spiritual goals to strive toward during 2021. Remember, goals are simply dreams with a deadline. They give us something positive to work for and help us with motivation, especially during difficult times.

Personal Goals – 2021

  • Focus on energy planning over time planning
  • Take a daily walk
  • Use Calm app daily for breath work
  • Eat 200+ plant species during the year
  • Experiment with more wild foods
  • Increase my time in community service

Let’s not wait another day to change unhealthy behaviors. Don’t wait until your body and mind suffers. Do it TODAY for a happier, healthier you!

Thank you, Ted. I am enjoying learning about all the plants that were lovingly planted and care for for so many years. It’s our pleasure.

Those are some good goals, Jenny.
A big goal for me is to wash my floors. I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while. Usually I wash my floors in anticipation of having company, but I haven’t had any for a long time–I’m really doing a very excellent job at social distancing.
It’s been cold and rainy here going on three days now. I’ve got two big buckets full of nice clear rainwater. Maybe I’ll wash my floors today; wouldn’t that be something?
    You inspire me.
much love & respect to you and your family

Thank you, Owen. The feelings are mutual. You always know how to put a smile on our faces. A house only needs to be healthy enough to live in, but dirty enough to feel comfortable in. When you’re ready your floors will be there. We send our warm “Aloha!” to you.

Yes, my floors will be there when I’m ready.
